After BJP Leader Complains, Bengal Poll Official Suspended Over SIR Lapse

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken decisive action in West Bengal, suspending a senior poll official in North 24 Parganas district following the discovery of significant irregularities during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The move underscores the ECI's unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity and transparency of the democratic process.

The official in question, Sumitra Pratim Prodhan, who concurrently served as both the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) and Block Development Officer (BDO) for Basirhat-II, has been suspended. Investigations by the Election Commission revealed that Prodhan had unlawfully delegated critical responsibilities, assigning four individuals as Additional AEROs to oversee hearings concerning discrepancies within voter lists. Crucially, these individuals had not received proper authorization and were never officially designated as AEROs under the stringent provisions of Section 13C of the Representation of the People Act, 1950.

This serious lapse was deemed a direct violation of established legal frameworks and electoral protocols by the Election Commission. Reacting swiftly, the ECI has mandated Prodhan’s immediate suspension and explicitly barred the officer from any further involvement in electoral roll revision activities. Furthermore, the Commission has initiated immediate disciplinary proceedings, demanding a comprehensive compliance report within 48 hours and requesting continuous updates on the progression of these actions to ensure accountability.

The controversy first came to public light and gained significant traction following allegations raised by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal and a prominent BJP leader. Adhikari utilized social media platforms to highlight the issue, asserting widespread manipulation of the electoral process within the state. In a particularly strong statement, he condemned the use of contractual staff for sensitive electoral roles, describing it as "deeply shocking and outrageous." He further alleged that the state administration, led by the Trinamool Congress, was actively undermining the foundational integrity of the upcoming elections.

Adhikari's accusations detailed that the Block Development Officer had permitted temporary and contractual employees – individuals lacking the requisite authority, training, and accountability – to conduct critical hearings related to voter list discrepancies between January 22 and January 31, 2026. He warned that such unauthorized actions posed a grave risk, potentially leading to widespread voter manipulation, the insertion of fraudulent entries, and systematic rigging at the booth level as the state gears up for future electoral contests.

"This represents a blatant mockery of democratic processes and a direct assault on the fairness of our elections," Adhikari declared, urging the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal to promptly annul these unlawful orders. He emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring that only properly authorized and trained officials are entrusted with managing such sensitive and crucial electoral functions, which directly impact the validity of the electoral roll.

This unfolding controversy takes place during a critical juncture, as hearings concerning discrepancies in electoral rolls are actively being conducted across West Bengal as part of the Special Intensive Revision exercise. It has deployed an increased number of micro roll observers, specially seconded from various other states, to oversee the revision process across West Bengal.
