Veteran Parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor has firmly reiterated his position against engaging in public discourse regarding his recent absence from a crucial Congress party meeting in Delhi. Emphasizing the sanctity of internal party processes, the four-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram stated that any concerns or clarifications pertaining to party affairs would be addressed directly with the Congress leadership, rather than through public statements or media platforms.
Speaking candidly at the widely attended Kerala Literature Festival, Dr. Tharoor underscored his belief that such sensitive matters are best resolved within the party’s established internal forums. "I am not here to make any political declarations. This is a literary festival," he stated, adding, "These are issues I need to take up with my own party leadership and not in a public forum." This stance reinforces his commitment to maintaining party discipline and resolving disagreements through structured dialogue.
The meeting in question brought together senior leaders of the Congress state unit to strategize for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections later this year. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge and former President Rahul Gandhi were among those present, highlighting the significance of the discussions. As one of the party's most recognizable and articulate voices from Kerala, Dr. Tharoor’s presence was widely anticipated. However, sources indicate that his absence was due to a prior, unavoidable commitment, a fact that he had reportedly communicated to the party leadership well in advance.
Dr. Tharoor further indicated his immediate plans to travel to Delhi for the parliamentary session, expressing his expectation for a direct and comprehensive discussion with the party's top brass. Reflecting on his extensive tenure within the Congress, he remarked, "I have been in Congress for the last 17 years. Whatever has gone wrong needs to be addressed, and it will be addressed in the appropriate forum." This statement signals his intent to proactively engage with the leadership to iron out any perceived issues.
Addressing the flurry of media reports surrounding his non-attendance, Dr. Tharoor chose not to offer further public explanations. He acknowledged the varied nature of the coverage, noting, "The issue has been adequately covered by the media. Some reports may be right, some may not. I will not publicly clarify my reasons." He firmly reiterated that his unavailability had been communicated to the party leadership beforehand, thus rendering further public commentary unnecessary in his view.
Beyond the immediate controversy, Dr. Tharoor also took the opportunity to defend his previous stance on "Operation Sindoor," a matter that had generated considerable public debate. He asserted that his views on the subject did not contravene the official Congress position in Parliament. Acknowledging that there had been differing opinions, he maintained that he stood by his convictions. Referencing a column he penned following a significant incident in Pahalgam, Dr. Tharoor reiterated his argument for the necessity of a kinetic response to ensure accountability and prevent further aggression, underscoring his principled stand on national security matters.
In a broader reflection, the Parliamentarian also touched upon the bedrock of Indian democracy, the Constitution. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assertion that the Constitution is sacrosanct and emphasized its remarkable resilience, having withstood numerous challenges and evolving political landscapes over time. Dr. Tharoor observed that even factions that once expressed reservations about the Constitution have, in time, come to embrace its fundamental tenets, a testament to its enduring strength and unifying power in the nation.
These developments and Dr. Tharoor’s candid remarks did not go unnoticed by the opposition. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly reacted, with prominent leader CR Kesavan publicly accusing the Congress of targeting Dr. Tharoor for what he termed "placing national interest above party considerations." The BJP further claimed that Dr. Tharoor's comments, particularly those concerning national security and his defence of "Operation Sindoor," had evidently caused unease and unsettlement within the Congress leadership, suggesting a deeper ideological rift.
Despite the unfolding political sparring and external pressures, Dr. Tharoor remained steadfast in his conviction that internal party matters require an internal resolution. His consistent message underscores a preference for direct, constructive engagement with the party leadership over public debates, signalling his dedication to resolving differences through established channels and maintaining party cohesion.
