Trinamool, BJP Supporters Clash Near Kolkata, Makeshift Stage Set On Fire

KOLKATA – A volatile political climate in West Bengal escalated into open conflict on Sunday in Sakher Bazar, Behala, a bustling locality approximately 11 kilometers from the heart of Kolkata. Intense clashes erupted between supporters of two major political parties following a public gathering, resulting in property damage and accusations of deliberate instigation from both sides.

The genesis of the confrontation reportedly stemmed from disputes over the placement of party flags in preparation for political activities. The situation rapidly deteriorated after a significant public meeting, the 'Parivartan Sankalp Sabha', addressed by a prominent leader and election co-incharge, Biplab Kumar Deb, concluded in the afternoon. Sources indicate that shortly after Deb's departure from the venue, chaos ensued.

Eyewitness accounts and party allegations suggest that a makeshift stage, which had hosted the political leader just moments before, was engulfed in flames. This act of vandalism occurred amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions. Representatives of the party whose leader spoke at the rally swiftly attributed the arson to rival political workers, accusing them of storming the venue, vandalizing the site, and setting the stage ablaze in a blatant act of political intimidation.

The violence, however, was not one-sided. Following the alleged arson, reports emerged of retaliatory actions. Supporters of the party whose leader spoke were accused of vandalizing the local office of a rival party councillor, identified as Sudip Polley. This tit-for-tat violence underscores the deep-seated rivalry and the readiness of ground-level cadres to engage in direct confrontation, transforming political discourse into street-level skirmishes.

A prominent national IT cell chief took to social media, sharing visuals of the clash and asserting, "Fearing an impending defeat, political operatives have once again unleashed political terror on the streets of Kolkata. Moments after our election co-incharge and former Chief Minister addressed voters, workers of the opposing party stormed the venue, vandalised the site, and after his departure set the sabha stage on fire in the middle of a bustling market." He further added, "The ruling party has reduced Bengal to a theatre of terror. Their operatives are rampaging across the state, torching democracy in a desperate bid to cling to power."

Echoing these sentiments, the South Kolkata District President stated, "Today we had a political meeting of our prominent leader in Behala Paschim. Permission for which had already been taken two to three days before the programme. We wanted a peaceful meeting today. But since the ruling party prevented us from putting up party flags from the beginning, they intentionally provoked the violence today to disturb the speech." These statements paint a picture of premeditated disruption aimed at stifling opposition activities.

Conversely, representatives from the ruling party vehemently denied the allegations and offered a different narrative. Local Members of the Legislative Assembly, Debasish Kumar and Ratna Chatterjee, arrived at the scene to engage with their party workers and assess the situation. One MLA asserted, "I had come to attend a badminton tournament by our boys, and came to know that rival party supporters tried to disturb the game. The opposition does not know we have our leader, with us. The more they attack us, the more we become stronger." This statement suggests that the ruling party perceives the events as an attempt by the opposition to disrupt local community events and challenge their established presence.
