In a devastating incident that sent shockwaves across the nation, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, aged 66, tragically passed away in an aircraft crash near Baramati Airport. The fatal accident, which occurred on the morning of January 28, 2026, also claimed the lives of four other individuals on board, plunging Maharashtra and Indian politics into mourning.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound grief, stating he was “shocked and saddened” by Ajit Pawar’s “untimely” demise. In a heartfelt tribute shared on a widely-used social media platform, the Prime Minister lauded Pawar as a “leader of the people” with deep-rooted connections at the grassroots level. “He was widely respected as a hardworking personality at the forefront of serving the people of Maharashtra. His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy. His untimely demise is very shocking and saddening. Condolences to his family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi conveyed.
The ill-fated aircraft, a Learjet 45 operated by a private aviation company, VSR Ventures, was en route from Mumbai to Ajit Pawar’s home constituency of Baramati when it encountered difficulties. Reports indicate the aircraft burst into flames shortly after reportedly attempting a second approach to Baramati Airport. Aviation authorities have confirmed that five individuals were on board: Ajit Pawar, his Personal Security Officer (PSO), his attendant, and the two-member crew, comprising the pilot in command and the first officer. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the crash, focusing on flight data, air traffic control communications, and potential technical malfunctions.
Ajit Pawar’s sudden death has created a significant void in Maharashtra’s political landscape. A prominent figure within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Pawar was a seasoned politician known for his sharp administrative skills and dedication to public service. At the time of his passing, he was actively involved in campaigning for local body polls, with four election rallies scheduled in Baramati. His absence will undoubtedly be felt during a crucial period of political activity.
Born on July 22, 1959, in Deolali Pravara, Ahmednagar district, Ajit Pawar’s journey into public life began early. His academic pursuits were cut short following the death of his father, Anantrao Pawar, who had worked at Mumbai’s renowned Rajkamal Studios. Entering the cooperative sector, he was elected to the board of a cooperative sugar factory at the tender age of 23 in 1982, signaling his early aptitude for leadership and public engagement. Under the guidance and shadow of his uncle, the veteran politician Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar steadily rose through the ranks, becoming a formidable force in state politics. He served multiple terms as Deputy Chief Minister and held various crucial ministerial portfolios, leaving an indelible mark on governance in Maharashtra.
He is survived by his wife, Sunetra Pawar, and his two sons, Jay Pawar and Parth Pawar. The entire nation extends its deepest sympathies to his family and countless supporters during this period of immense grief. His legacy as a committed leader and administrator will be remembered by the people of Maharashtra for years to come.
