Passengers aboard India's pioneering Vande Bharat sleeper train, connecting Howrah and Kamakhya, can soon look forward to an expanded culinary experience. Following significant feedback from travelers, railway authorities are set to introduce a range of non-vegetarian food options to the onboard menu.
This development comes as a welcome change for many patrons who had previously expressed concerns over the exclusively vegetarian fare initially offered on the newly launched overnight service. An official from the Eastern Railway confirmed that non-vegetarian meal choices are anticipated to be available within approximately one week, addressing the growing demand for diverse food selections on this premium route.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train, a significant step in modernizing India's rail travel infrastructure, was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17. Its regular commercial operations commenced shortly thereafter, with services from Kamakhya station in Guwahati starting on January 22 and from Howrah on January 23. This six-day-a-week service aims to provide a comfortable and efficient overnight journey between these two key regions.
A core promise of the railway service for this route was to infuse the onboard dining experience with authentic local flavors. Passengers departing from Kamakhya were assured of Assamese culinary delights, while those beginning their journey from Howrah could expect the rich tastes of West Bengal. It is widely recognized that the local cuisines of both West Bengal and Assam are deeply rooted in non-vegetarian dishes, featuring a wide array of fish and meat preparations, making the initial vegetarian-only menu a point of contention for many.
The decision to diversify the menu aligns with the offerings on other premier train services across the country. Passengers on trains like the Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, and even the existing Vande Bharat day trains already enjoy the flexibility of choosing between vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals. This consistency ensures that the Vande Bharat sleeper train lives up to the high standards of passenger convenience and choice set by its counterparts.
Further underscoring the commitment to passenger preferences, Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, recently highlighted the matter. He conveyed that the Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, had provided assurances regarding the introduction of non-vegetarian food options on the Vande Bharat sleeper train. Majumdar emphasized that while the initial menu featured vegetarian dishes, the addition of non-vegetarian choices was always part of the broader plan.
Majumdar reiterated the cultural significance of this decision, noting, "The populace of both West Bengal and Assam predominantly favors non-vegetarian cuisine. Therefore, it is only fitting that such preferred delicacies are made available on the Vande Bharat sleeper train to enhance the overall travel experience." This strategic move aims to better cater to the regional culinary habits and ensure a more inclusive and satisfying journey for all passengers.
