In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across the nation, a 27-year-old elite SWAT commando, Kajal Chaudhary, succumbed to her injuries after allegedly being brutally assaulted by her husband with a dumbbell. The tragedy, which unfolded in Delhi, highlights the pervasive menace of domestic violence and dowry harassment, even affecting those dedicated to public service.
Kajal, who was four months pregnant at the time of the heinous attack, fought for her life for five agonizing days before breathing her last at a hospital in Ghaziabad on January 27. Her husband, Ankur, a clerk in the Ministry of Defence, was apprehended merely hours after the assault, which took place at their rented residence in Mohan Garden.
The incident gained a particularly chilling dimension through the horrifying account of Kajal’s brother, Nikhil, a constable stationed at Parliament Street police station. In a heart-wrenching testimony, Nikhil recounted the fateful phone call he received from his brother-in-law, Ankur, on January 22. “Keep this call on recording, it will serve as police evidence. I am killing your sister. The police cannot do anything to me. Listen to your sister's screams...” These words, uttered by a husband as he allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife, paint a grim picture of cruelty and utter disregard for human life.
Nikhil described the terror of hearing his sister’s pained screams over the phone, a sound that will forever haunt him. “She was screaming in agony,” he stated, his voice still trembling with grief and helplessness. The call abruptly disconnected, leaving Nikhil in a state of frantic despair, unable to intervene directly as the horrific events unfolded miles away.
The family alleges that Kajal had been subjected to continuous dowry harassment and domestic violence at the hands of Ankur and his relatives throughout her pregnancy. This tragic pattern of abuse, often hidden behind closed doors, ultimately escalated to an unthinkable act of brutality.
According to Nikhil, the ordeal began with a call from Ankur urging him to “make your sister understand.” Nikhil tried to calm him and immediately dialed Kajal’s number. “She usually didn't tell us much about her struggles, but that day she was recounting her ordeal. As we spoke, he (Ankur) became enraged that she was confiding in me and snatched the phone,” Nikhil explained. It was then that Ankur made his chilling declaration, followed by Kajal’s screams, before the line went dead.
Approximately five minutes later, Nikhil’s phone rang again. It was Ankur, coldly stating, “She's dead. Come to the hospital.” Upon arrival with police personnel, Nikhil was confronted with a scene of unimaginable horror. “When I saw my sister... not even an enemy would kill someone like this,” he tearfully recalled. Kajal’s head was severely crushed, and her body bore multiple injuries, indicative of a savage assault. The family desperately sought medical attention, attempting to admit her to several hospitals, but were reportedly informed of her slim chances of survival. She was eventually admitted to a hospital in Ghaziabad, where she ultimately succumbed.
The couple, who had known each other since their college days in Panipat, Haryana, had a love marriage on November 23, 2023. However, their marital bliss was short-lived, marred by frequent disputes. They relocated from their ancestral home in Gannaur, Haryana, to a rented apartment in Mohan Garden, West Delhi, in December 2024, in an attempt to escape the constant strife. Despite the change of scenery, the conflicts persisted.
Police investigations have revealed that financial strains and domestic quarrels were significant contributors to the escalating tensions. A police official confirmed that the couple had taken on some debt, leading to frequent arguments over money and household expenses. The official added that Ankur allegedly first hit Kajal’s head against a door frame before proceeding to attack her with the dumbbell.
Based on Nikhil’s complaint, a case was initially registered at Mohan Garden police station for attempted murder. Following Kajal’s untimely demise, the charges have been upgraded to murder, ensuring that the legal process will now pursue justice for this horrific crime. The couple also has a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who is currently being cared for by his maternal grandparents. Nikhil affirmed the family’s decision to raise the child, shielding him from the traumatic truth until he is old enough to comprehend such a profound loss. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address domestic violence and provide robust support systems for victims, preventing such heart-wrenching outcomes in the future.
