In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves through the national capital, a 27-year-old Delhi Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) commando, Kajal Chaudhary, was brutally murdered by her husband. The tragic event, which allegedly stemmed from persistent dowry demands and domestic disputes, has brought to light the grim realities faced by many women, even those in positions of authority.
The horrifying crime unfolded on the night of January 22, when Kajal's husband, Ankur, a clerk in the Ministry of Defence posted in Delhi Cantonment, allegedly assaulted her with a dumbbell, inflicting fatal head injuries. What makes this case particularly chilling are the desperate and harrowing moments recounted by Kajal's brother, Nikhil, who is also a constable in the police force.
Nikhil vividly recalled receiving a phone call from his brother-in-law, Ankur, that fateful night. "Make your sister understand," Ankur reportedly stated, a phrase often preceding threats in domestic violence cases. Concerned, Nikhil immediately contacted Kajal, who, unlike her usual reticence, began to confide in him about her ordeal. Her candidness, however, seemed to enrage Ankur, who snatched the phone from her.
What followed was a sequence of events that would forever haunt Nikhil. Ankur's voice, cold and devoid of remorse, instructed him to record the call for "police evidence." "I am killing your sister. Police won't be able to do anything," Ankur allegedly declared, before Nikhil was subjected to the terrifying sound of his sister's screams, followed by an abrupt silence as the call disconnected. Just five minutes later, Ankur called back with a chilling message: "She is dead. Come to the hospital." The family rushed to the hospital with police personnel, only to find Kajal's life tragically cut short. "Not even an enemy kills someone like this," Kajal's brother lamented, his voice heavy with grief.
Kajal, a dedicated commando, was four months pregnant at the time of her death. She was allegedly struck multiple times, particularly on the head with a heavy dumbbell, at their rented residence in Mohan Garden Extension, West Delhi. Despite being rushed to a Ghaziabad hospital, she succumbed to her injuries on the morning of January 27. Ankur was arrested hours later, and a case of murder was registered.
The roots of this tragedy appear to lie deep within a history of alleged dowry harassment and marital discord. Kajal’s family claims she was routinely subjected to demands for dowry by her mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law. The couple, who married on November 23, 2023, frequently argued over financial matters and household responsibilities.
According to Kajal’s mother, her daughter had even taken a loan to meet the financial demands of her in-laws, and Ankur himself had borrowed money from Kajal's parents. Kajal’s father, Rakesh, recounted how despite gifting a Bullet motorcycle, gold jewellery, and substantial cash at the wedding, the demands persisted. "They said our son would have got a car (had he married someone else). Later, my daughter even arranged a car, but they didn't stop harassing her. We couldn't even speak freely to her," Rakesh shared, highlighting the suffocating environment Kajal endured.
This was not the first instance of physical abuse. Approximately five months prior to her death, Ankur had allegedly slapped Kajal. Nikhil had intervened, urging his sister to return home. Ankur had then apologized, swearing on their child that he would not repeat his actions. Kajal chose to stay, a decision that ultimately proved fatal.
Adding to her ordeal, even during her pregnancy, Kajal was reportedly forced to perform strenuous household chores after returning from her demanding police duties. "She would cook, wash clothes and utensils despite being pregnant," Nikhil alleged, painting a picture of relentless pressure and lack of support.
The couple’s relationship began in college in Panipat, blooming into marriage. However, frequent disputes at their native home in Ganaur, Haryana, led them to move to a rented accommodation in Mohan Garden in December 2024. Despite the change of scenery, the marital tensions, fuelled by alleged dowry demands and abuse, reportedly continued unabated, culminating in this horrific act of violence.
Kajal leaves behind a one-and-a-half-year-old son, who is currently being cared for by his maternal grandparents. The family has made the heart-wrenching decision to raise the child themselves, planning to reveal the tragic truth of his mother's death only when he is mature enough to comprehend such a profound loss. This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of domestic violence and dowry-related crimes that continue to plague society, demanding urgent attention and systemic change.
