As the cinematic masterpiece 'Sholay' approaches its golden jubilee, legendary filmmaker Ramesh Sippy and veteran actress Hema Malini have offered rare glimpses into the making of the iconic film, sharing captivating behind-the-scenes stories that continue to enthral fans. These candid revelations shed new light on the dedication and spirited personality of superstar Dharmendra, who played the unforgettable role of Veeru.
Among the most astonishing tales is Dharmendra’s extraordinary feat of endurance. Recalling the incident, Sippy recounted how the actor, driven by an inexplicable determination, once embarked on an impromptu 50-kilometre trek. "One day, Dharmendra decided he wanted to walk all the way from the hotel to the shooting spot, a journey spanning nearly 50 kilometres," Sippy revealed. "He began his incredible journey around two or three in the morning, taking only a brief pause before continuing on. He arrived at the location by seven in the morning, and after an hour's rest, he was ready to face the cameras. It was truly unbelievable, a testament to his sheer willpower and commitment." Hema Malini further corroborated, emphasising, "He would walk miles and miles, quite remarkable."
Beyond his physical prowess, Sippy also fondly reminisced about Dharmendra's more lighthearted and mischievous side. "That was one aspect of Dharmendra; the other was his wonderfully playful nature," the filmmaker noted. He elaborated on an instance where a subtle wink and a knowing gesture would signify a touch of vodka being discreetly added to coconut water. "It provided him with a certain 'spirit,' enhancing his vibrant energy on set," Sippy explained, hinting at the actor’s method of embracing his character's jovial essence.
Sippy further delved into the multifaceted personality of the celebrated actor. "There was a childlike innocence in him that often shone through, yet within moments, he could transform into a strong, serious man," Sippy described. "That particular quality was immensely endearing and winning. He could experience anger, but just as quickly, he would regain his composure and cheerful demeanour." This unique blend of characteristics undoubtedly contributed to the magnetic charm of his portrayal of Veeru.
'Sholay,' which premiered in 1975, transcended mere filmmaking to become a cultural phenomenon and an unparalleled cult classic in Indian cinema. Its enduring appeal lies not just in its revolutionary storytelling and technical brilliance but also in the powerful performances of its stellar ensemble cast. Alongside Dharmendra, the film featured cinematic titans such as Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan in his iconic role as Gabbar Singh, AK Hangal, and Sachin Pilgaonkar, among others.
